Houston Mortgage Market Update: August 25, 2008

When someone is surprised it means he is “not well-calibrated.” In layman’s terms, his expected range of outcomes was too narrow.
That was the case last week with most economists, for their range of expected outcomes of the producer price index was too narrow. Producer price inflation hit 1.2% in July; more than double the consensus estimate.

A big drop in oil prices helped fuel a significant rise in stock prices last week. However, is there normally a neat and tidy inverse relationship between oil prices and stock prices?
Crude oil prices dropped 7.9% last week while the Dow Jones Industrial Average popped 3.6%, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Texas Existing Home Sales Report
A total of 23,847 existing homes were sold in Texas in June, a 15.9 percent decline from June 2007, according to MLS data compiled by the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. The median price rose 0.6 percent to $155,900 during the same period, and the state finished the month with a 6.8-month inventory on existing homes.read more
